Cement Shipments Soar in April

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in April 2021 were an estimated 9.7 million metric tons (Mt), a 19% increase from shipments in April 2020, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through April totaled an estimated 31.1 Mt, a 6.8% increase from those for the same period in 2020. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in April 2021 were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Ohio) received 40% of April shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 220,000 metric tons (t) in April 2021, a 13% increase from those in April 2020. Shipments for the year through April totaled an estimated 768,000 t, a 2.4% increase from those for the same period in 2020. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in April 2021 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, California and Georgia; these states received 56% of April shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.7 Mt in April 2021, a 4.4% increase from production in April 2020. Production for the year through April totaled an estimated 22.4 Mt, a decrease of 3.1% from the same period in 2020. The leading clinker-producing States in April 2021 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida, and Alabama.
