Cement Shipments Jump 8% in December

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in December 2019 were 6.7 million metric tons (Mt), an 8.0% increase from shipments in December 2018, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for 2019 totaled 101 Mt, an increase of 3.7% from those in 2018. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in December 2019 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Ohio) received 45% of December shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled 164,000 metric tons in December 2019, an increase of 9.7% from those in December 2018. Shipments for 2019 totaled 2.4 Mt, essentially unchanged from those in 2018. The leading masonry-cement-consuming states in December 2019 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia; these states received 61% of December shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled 6.6 Mt in December 2019, essentially unchanged from production in December 2018. Production for 2019 totaled 78.9 Mt, an increase of 2.3% from production in 2018. The leading clinker-producing states in December 2019 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama.
