December Cement Shipments Drop 8.6 Percent

Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in December 2016 were about 6.0 million metric tons (Mt), down by 8.6 percent from sales in December 2015, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in December 2016 were Texas, California, Florida, Missouri and Alabama, in descending order.

The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and New York, in descending order) received 44 percent of the December shipments. Sales for the entire year totaled 93.3 Mt, up by 1.9 percent from those in 2015 overall.

Clinker production totaled 5.5 Mt in December 2016, down by 20 percent from the output in December 2015. The leading clinker-producing states in December were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama. Production for the year totaled 75.7 Mt, down slightly from that for the full year 2015.

Masonry cement data for 2015 and 2016 have been revised downward to remove material that was not masonry cement. Masonry cement shipments of about 175,000 metric tons in December 2016 were down by 5.6 percent from those in December. The leading masonry-cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia; these received about 56 percent of December’s shipments. Shipments for the year were 2.4 Mt, up by 4.65 percent from total shipments in 2015.
