DUST COLLECTOR FILTER

According to the manufacturer, HemiPleat filter offers extended service life and lower pressure drop compared to standard dust-collector cartridge filters — typically double the life at half the delta P. The new filter line will include elements to fit practically all types of new and existing cartridge dust collectors for high-efficiency capture of dry dusts in a full range of applications. Key to the filter's performance is a patent-pending pleating technology based on a media pack design that holds the cartridge pleats open, making virtually all the media surface available for filtration in contrast to conventional cartridges, which are packed too tightly to maximize media use. The wide, uniform spacing results in lower pressure drop for more efficient performance and facilitates dust release from the cartridge during pulse cleaning, while requiring less compressed air for many applications. Further, product developers note that testing shows the HemiPleat cartridge holds more dust than conventional filters, allowing a longer time period between cleaning cycles. The standard HemiPleat filter media is a “PolyTech” silicone-treated polyester/cellulose blend with filtration efficiency of 99.99 percent on 0.5 micron particles and larger, plus high moisture resistance. For specialized applications, an ultra-high (99.999 percent) efficiency media is available, as well as carbon-impregnated and fire-retardant finishes. Farr Air Pollution Control, (+1) 870-933-8048

HOPPER CAR UNLOADER

The sleek, concave design of the Carhoe MS blade allows it to slice through product and open a hole over hopper doors. Its 11½-ft. length can cut through the load, scrape the sides of the cars, push or pull material through the hoppers, and break up chunks left in the car or on the grizzly. Constructed of 100 KSI T1 abrasion-resistant steel, the ¾-in.-thick blade is designed to penetrate coal, limestone, clay or any product that packs in transit. Albert Products, Inc., (+1) 800-252-3787

X-RAY SPECTROMETER

The ZSXmini II is a full-range, air-cooled, benchtop Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence spectrometer. Its small footprint suits mobile laboratories to measure metals in soils and sediments. In the characterization and remediation of contaminated soil sites, the spectrometer's low detection limits, wide elemental range (Na through U) and powerful software provide quick and reliable assays of coarse or processed soils, offering complementary validation for in-situ techniques. The ZSXmini II can determine if further testing is needed by other analytical means and — unlike Energy Dispersive XRF analyzers — can completely resolve many overlapping elements. Standardless analysis is also possible with Fundamental Parameters software. Rigaku/MSC Inc., (+1) 281-363-1033

NECK SHADE

The Neck Shade fits standard hard hat liners to offer cooling relief for outdoor workers. Made of a specially engineered three-layer evaporative fabric, it offers two to three hours of cooling once activated as water is added to the material, either from a running tap, submersion in a sink, or in a zip-lock activation bag. When not activated, the fabric serves as insulation to keep the wearer warm. Accordingly, the neck shade offers year-round comfort and safety as it covers the ears and neck without hindering the wearer's movement or peripheral vision. It is constructed of durable, breathable, outer shell fabrics — including the wearer's choice of high-visibility, fluorescent yellow polyester or desert camo Taslan — and a water repellent-coated liner. The shade measures 11 in. long, while its bottom width of 21 in. tapers at the top to allow the shade to easily attach to the suspension system of a standard hardhat or to a ball cap. Cutouts for the wearer's shoulders permit it to comfortably wrap around neck and ears for more complete cooling comfort and shade. It can be purchased for $32.00 at www.CoolingApparel.com. FORGED CHAIN

The manufacturer notes that its drop-forged, case-hardened, high-strength alloy conveyor chain suits many industries, including cement, coal, and gypsum. Together with sprockets and trailers, chains are usually available from stock in metric sizes of 102, 142, 216, and 260. A free in-house engineering service is available on request to design new chain conveyors or upgrade existing systems. Flights, pins and circlips are also offered. 4B Components, (+1) 309-698-5611

Houston Cement orders 1,650-tph-capacity cement ship unloader for import terminal

Houston Cement Co., L.P. awarded a contract in February 2005 to BMH Marine for a new high-capacity Siwertell ship unloader. The new model has inherited its structural design from Siwertell heavy-duty unloaders and its conveying system from previous cement unloaders, but with screw conveyors of a larger size. This transaction marks the first time the Siwertell ST 640-D will be applied to high-capacity cement unloading at a marine import terminal. The new unloader will be delivered in February 2006 and is scheduled to be in commercial operation by mid-year.

In the early 1980s, BMH established an industry standard for 800-tph cement unloaders with its continuous, screw-type Siwertell units, the manufacturer's representatives note. A new milestone in the evolution of high-capacity unloaders has been set, they add, with the introduction of a system offering unloading capacity up to 1,650 tph. BMH Marine's experience in high-capacity unloading of various dry bulk materials encompasses 235 Siwertell screw-type unloaders — including 35 units with capacities of 1,000 to 2,000 tph and 130 unloaders for cement — supplied since 1974 for a wide range of applications. Guaranteed as part of the new contract are an hourly rated unloading capacity of 1,500 tph and a through-the-ship capacity of 1,050 for the rail-mounted unloader.

A Siwertell ship unloader transfers material uninterruptedly to the downstream conveyor regardless of the movements of the ship unloader. A separate device, the Movable Transfer Trolley, continuously transfers material in an environmentally safe manner onto the downstream fully enclosed conveyor, even at the guaranteed high unloading rates. An inlet feeder monitored by an electronic control contributes to high-capacity and high-efficiency operations.

In view of high freight rates, investing in a Siwertell unloader reportedly reduces ship costs in port by nearly 50% compared with the 800-tph unloading system. Further, reduced berth occupancy allows other activities on the dock. The manufacturer emphasizes that higher unloading capacity and lower ship costs at port provided by the ST 640-D result in a short payback period for machinery investment. — BMH Marine, www.bmhmarine.se
