Particle sizing

The Autosampler unit for the Malvern Mastersizer 2000 features a sample autoconcentration facility, which provides a sample concentration that is optimal for perfect size measurement, the manufacturer notes. The Autosampler 2000's isokinetic sampling system ensures that even the broadest particle size distributions are correctly sampled without loss of either the coarse fraction or the fines. The sampler delivers a standard 10-ml “slug” of sample dispersion to the sizer. If the resulting sample concentration is too high, the system automatically calculates the number of dilution steps that must be carried out in the sample pot in order to deliver a 10-ml dose of suspension that will give the right final concentration. The Autosampler then carries out these dilution steps by removing a perfect 10-ml sample from the pot and substituting a 10-ml dose of clean dispersant, thoroughly mixing it each time. In this way, the concentration is progressively reduced, while the original size distribution is preserved. Once the correct number of dilution steps has been completed, the sample dispersion unit of the sizer is flushed and prepared to measure the sample at the correct concentration. Using this technique, it is reportedly possible to achieve accurate reduction of concentrations (expressed in terms of laser obscuration) from +50% to 5%, thus reducing reliance on accuracy of sample loading by the operator and ensuring consistency of results. X-ray spectrometer

Company introduces the S4 Pioneer X-ray spectrometer, the latest product in the Spectrometry Solutions line for multi-elemental (Beryllium — Uranium) analysis in solids, powders, and liquids. According to the manufacturer, the S4 Pioneer combines state-of-the-art 4kW X-ray spectrometry technology with analytical and handling versatility in addition to cost-efficiency based on minimized consumption of operating resources and the smallest amount of laboratory space (about 0.8 m3) required. The spectrometer brings an efficient and economical solution to high power excitation at 4kW by connecting it to an external cooling water system. Water consumption, automatically minimized by means of the generator power setting, is typically one-third that of conventional X-ray spectrometer systems, designers note. The S4 Pioneer is suitable for all applications requiring short analysis times and high sample throughput. Its performance for light element analysis is based on an optimal excitation at a maximum of 150 mA, combined with 75 µm ultra-thin X-ray tube window, a broad selection of intensity optimized multilayer analyzer crystal and collimator combinations, and the application of high transmission detector window materials. High-cement refractories

Introducing a “high-cement” product line, the manufacturer offers products consisting of castable, gunnable and pumpable refractories for applications with temperature conditions ranging from 2600° to 3000°F. Typically used in general duty service for the power, hydrocarbon processing, cement and minerals markets, this extended line is part of an initial staggered development and product inventory strategy implemented to serve the special demands of the installer/contractor. To establish credibility, product offerings have been scheduled to coincide with the timing of tests and product modifications to reach a performance level in which the customers can feel confident, developers note. The introduction of the high-cement line is mid-stage in the company's 16-month plan to have a comprehensive set of fully proven refractory products on the market. Company representatives estimate that within the last quarter of 2001, a line of plastics and rams will also be available nationwide. Stevenson Specialty Refractories, (+1) 610-323-5515

Rotary torque sensor

The 1650B Rotary Torque Sensor clamps onto the drive train and, within 15 minutes, converts the shaft into a rotary torque transducer ready to take measurement data. The system avoids the necessity of breaking into the drive train to install an in-line torque cell, eliminates the need for skilled personnel to cement strain gauges onto the shaft, and does not require the installation of maintenance-intensive slip rings. The 1650B clamp-on sensor assembly comes precalibrated. Installation requires the user to clamp on the two halves of the sensor shell, position the antenna and connect the wireless receiver — nothing to wear out and virtually maintenance-free. The rotary torque transducer is suitable for proving trials or commissioning of driver/driven transmission trains to ensure design criteria are met or that drive trains are not overloaded. Appropriate for temporary or permanent installations, the sensor is immune to oil, dirt and water, making it useful for most industrial applications. The unit is available for shaft diameters from 2.5 in. to 15 in. and can be used at shaft speeds up to 2,500 rpm. Wireless Data Corp., (+1) 800-227-8190

Slurry hose

The abrasion-resistant, natural rubber-lined slurry hose can be cut to the required length at the job site. Since the flexible Cut End Hose can be trimmed on-site to the required length and is easily fitted with reusable flange-couplings, hose-related downtime is minimized and the inventory costs of stocking varying lengths of hose are reduced. Given the abrasiveness of many slurry products, the Cut End Hose constructed with premium natural rubber offers exceptionally long wear-life as compared to PVC and metal pipes and hoses, reducing maintenance costs and improving operational efficiency. Rated at 100 psi, Linatex Cut End Hose has a minimum bend radius of eight times the hose inner diameter. The corrugated hose body incorporates reinforced wire to provide a superior seal with the couplings. In addition, the lightweight reusable aluminum flanged-couplings require few hand tools for installation. Linatex, Inc., (+1) 615-230-2100

Arm support

A plastic and foam arm support that fits long-handled tools, Leverage King takes pressure away from the wrist and redirects it to the muscles of the arm for greater lifting power. By keeping the wrist straight, the six-ounce device helps prevent the cause or aggravation of carpal-tunnel syndrome due to repetitive stress, as confirmed by specialist Richard Istrico, M.D., Howard Beach, N.Y., and Heidi Zierdt, LMT. Digital level measurement

Using the latest digital signal processing (DSP) technology, MillScan DSP2000 replaces analog technology-based measuring instruments used to gauge fill-levels in ball mills, saving customers hundreds of thousands of dollars over the lifespan of a mill, the manufacturer notes. By switching to DSP technology, MillScan users are able to increase the production of a mill while reducing the risk of under- or overfilling. Furthermore, the total energy absorbed by the mill decreases as its filling degree is increased; therefore, any increase in production represents a more than proportional reduction in power consumption, increasing customer savings. Where traditional instruments are positioned a few yards away from the mill to measure fill level, MillScan is positioned directly on the mill resulting in zero acoustical interference. Additionally, it permits tailoring and customizing to specific mill frequency characteristics, giving customers more control of their mill production. MillScan comes with Windows configuration and monitoring software. Digital Control Lab, (+1) 866-499-7651
