Marietta Structures in Marietta, Ohio, recently completed work on a slipform concrete silo for Dragon Products Inc. of Thomason, Maine. The slipform method of construction required continuous concrete pouring, and the Marietta plant operated around the clock to build the structure in 124 hours. When construction was finished, 800 yd of concrete and 72 tons of steel reinforcing bars had been used.

The new cement homogenizing silo, which holds 3,500 tons of cement, stands 111 ft tall and has a diameter of 46 ft. The lower walls are 24 in. thick, while the upper walls are 12 in. thick. The silo discharge configuration consists of a flat reinforced bin bottom that is 3½ ft thick, and a precast concrete inverted cone that is 31 ft in diam and 23 ft high. The precast concrete was fabricated in six individual pieces at the Marietta plant as well.

Dragon Products, the only cement manufacturing facility in New England, hired Marietta Structures to create the silo as part of a $52 million plant upgrade. Not only will the new silo increase cement production, but it also will reduce total emissions from the facility.
