Essex Cement Co. and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey celebrated the grand opening of the newly modernized Essex import terminal located at the Port of Newark. The new terminal represents an important phase in the long-time relationship between the port and the company.
Located at 182 Calcutta Street, Essex (which is owned by Titan America) has been a part of the port family since 1985, and has imported more than 6 million tons of powder into the metropolitan New York and New Jersey area thought its original 130,000-sq-ft warehouse.
Following the new construction, the Essex terminal can now store about 62,000 tons. The cement in delivered pneumatically from the import ship to the silos through a Kovako barge-mounted unloader at the rate of 500 to 600 tph. with a total of four silos, each 193 ft tall and 60 ft in diameter. Construction of the terminal was completed in June, and the first shipment of 40,000 tons of cement arrived in mid-June.
The New York/New Jersey construction market is one of the largest consumers of building products in the nation. As the anticipated pace of development continues, it is expected to fuel the demand for bulk and general cargo tonnages, including construction and building materials. Recognizing the demand uptick in the area, Titan seized the opportunity to modernize and improve its key import and distribution gateway in the Northeast.
