The purpose of “CEMENT 101, Version 2.0: A Guide to Careers in the Cement Industry” is to create an awareness of and interest in the cement industry at North American universities. Naturally, the first question one might ask is, “What's so special about the cement industry?”
The portland cement industry in the United States and Canada consists of more than 120 cement production facilities, as well as many offices and manufacturing plants that supply equipment and materials to those production facilities.
The cement industry employs ceramics, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, geological, materials, and mechanical engineers; analytical, organic, and inorganic chemists; geologists; and computer scientists. The industry is a relatively small, but integral, part of our nation's infrastructure and the world's economy. Cement manufacturing is based on appreciation of details, relationships, and technical know-how. It is a fascinating process that provides scope for solving the environmental and infrastructure challenges of the future.
Produced in a cooperative effort by the Portland Cement Association's Manufacturing Technical Committee and Cement Americas, CEMENT 101, Version 2.0 will provide an introduction to the production and distribution of cementitious products; a look at careers and career paths in the cement industry; profiles of cement companies making a difference in their communities and for their employees; and a resource and reference guide that will direct you to the companies and organizations you may want to contact regarding employment opportunities in the cement industry.
CEMENT 101, Version 2.0 is your look at one of the most exciting and important industries in North America. Good luck in whatever career you choose.
