A new study published by Ocean Shipping Consultants Ltd analyzes the prospects for cement production, consumption, imports and exports for each country in Asia, and examines the potential implications for non-Asian markets throughout the world.
The 185-page report, entitled “Asian Cement: Supply, Demand, & Trade to 2010,” gives detailed forecasts of developments over the next decade.
According to the report, annual cement consumption in Asia is forecast to increase from 924 million tons in 2000 to approximately 1.1 billion tons in 2005. This represents an overall increase in consumption of approximately 340 million tons.
Import demand will stay relatively low in Asia, with the high degree of annual volatility likely to be reduced, especially in the near-term, due to the continuation of excess supply in domestic national markets. Asian export sales will continue to be restricted by the quality factor. For non-Asian markets, exports from Asian suppliers will continue to pose a major threat to domestic suppliers, and to traditional import patterns, according to the study.
