In June, the Slag Cement Association presented six awards honoring top promotion efforts. Exceptional promotion efforts on the part of individuals and regional task groups helped increase the use of slag cement approximately 5.4% in 2003, with shipments topping 3 million metric tons. The awards and winners were:

  • President's Award for Promoter of the Year: Ryan Jacoby, Lehigh Cement Co.

  • Region of the Year: Mid-Atlantic Regional Task Group, chaired by Jacoby, with Lafarge North America's Michael Fletcher as vice chair.

  • Director's Awards for Outstanding Promotional Contributions: Michael Bayda, Lafarge North America; Guy Detwiler, Lehigh Southwest Cement Co.; Darrell Elliot, Buzzi Unicem USA; and Tony Sorcic, Holcim (US) Inc.

In addition, the association presented two awards honoring top projects using slag cement at its recent annual meeting in Chicago in June. The awards recognize innovation in design and construction.

  • AirTrain JFK — Most Innovative Use of Slag Cement in Concrete. A new transit system at JFK Airport in New York that links with Long Island Rail Road trains, NYC Transit subways, and local buses. Approximately 200,000 cu yd of concrete used, which includes 482 cast-in-place columns with 20% and 30% slag cement replacement rates, and 5,000 precast, post-tensioned segments with 40% slag cement replacement.
