Southdown Inc., Fairborn Plant, Xenia, Ohio The quarry department at the Southdown Fairborn cement plant designed a portable handrail system that provides fall protection for workers along the edge of the quarry high walls. The handrail system runs the length of the high wall and consists of steel tubing sections, modified with welded steel washers at one end, cables, and a come-along. The steel tubing sections are placed into the end-drilled holes. Cables and the come-along are then attached to the washers and tightened to remove the slack. Workers can then attach a lanyard to the cable from their safety harness. This procedure allows workers the ability to work freely while providing fall protection from the high wall. The cost of the materials was less than $200, and fabrication time was less than four hours. Set up time is about 15 minutes for each shot.
