Holnam Inc., Fort Collins Plant, LaPorte, Colorado The Holnam Fort Collins plant created a simple method for having the proper tool on hand for a daily housekeeping task. Several times each shift, a water lance is used to clean the build-up material in the preheater tower. Each time a vessel or duct door around the preheater is opened, a smaller amount of material falls onto the floor that becomes wet from the water lance activities. The floor was slick, and by the end of the week, the material had collected in piles. The solution was to return the spill material into the tower each time the water lance was used. To do this, a dedicated shovel would be available for this task, and a shovel storage rack was designed. The rack consists of a short length of 2-in. black pipe painted a distinctive color and welded to a hand rail, close to where the lancing takes place. Less than one hour was required to install each storage rack.
