PCA names student research recipients

Portland Cement Association awarded four graduate students with the PCA Education Foundation Fellowship at the association's recent Joint Fall Meeting in Chicago. Jim Repman, chair of the foundation, presided over the award luncheon.

The Education Foundation presented the students with $20,000 each for research, an honorary plaque, and a trip to Chicago for the awards luncheon. The 2003 recipients are (listed by university, student, professor, research title):

Cornell University

Scott Berlingame
Prof. Kenneth C. Hover
Title: “Concrete Quality Control Via Infrared Thermal Imaging”

University of New Brunswick

Donald Burden
Prof. Michael D. A. Thomas
Title: “The Durability of Concrete Containing High Levels of Supplementary Cementing Materials”

Purdue University

Narayanan Neithalath
Profs. Jan Olek and Jason Weiss
Title: “Reducing Noise of Concrete Pavement by Modifying Surface Characteristics”

The University of Texas at Austin

Jason Ideker
Prof. Kevin J. Folliard
Title: “Examination of the Effects of Temperature on Progression of Alkali Silica Reaction Using an Accelerated Temperature ASTM C 1293 Test”

On a related note, two fellowship recipients from 2002 presented the progress of their research and findings to date at the Durability Subcommittee of the Product Standards and Technology Committee also during the Joint Fall Meeting. These students are Raissa Douglas of Northwestern University and Zach Grasley from the University of Illinois at Urbana.
