Lafarge Corp. issued contracts to begin construction of a slag loading and grinding operation at its South Chicago, Ill. shipping terminal. The new facility will enable Lafarge to produce slag cement and load directly from its storage silos onto Calumet River barges and vessels.
Work at the site includes civil and foundation services; structural erection; process equipment and mechanical/electrical/piping installation; a new 8,000-ton storage silo; and construction of new office and electrical control buildings. Krupp Polysius is supplying the system design and equipment, and Graycor will act as general contractor.
