New York City Economic Development Corp. President Andrew Alper announced that Lafarge North America was designated to operate a modern cement distribution facility on the 25th Street Pier in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn. Lafarge will enter into a long-term lease for the 6.1-acre site and develop a $12 million storage and shipping terminal.
Located between the Gowanus Bay and Third Avenue, the fully paved pier measures about 200 ∞ 1,350 ft. According to the proposal, cement will be delivered to the Pier by means of marine barges from Lafarge's Ravena plant in upstate New York. The new facility will handle between 150,000 and 200,000 metric tons of product in the first year, growing to 300,000 mt in subsequent years.
