Lafarge North America is launching a relief effort for employees and their families of the Lafarge cement plant in Aceh, Indonesia, and other victims of the tsunami that struck South Asia on December 26, 2004. A total of 262 of 625 Lafarge employees remain missing and unaccounted for after the tsunami struck the plant and 35-building housing complex, located right on the coast line. Lafarge has established two means through which donations can be made:
Lafarge Employees Solidarity account — Donations are not tax-deductible, but monies go directly to affected employees and their families. Donations (checks only) should go to: Lafarge Employees Solidarity Fund, c/o Jennifer Faircloth, 12950 Worldgate Drive, Suite 500, Herndon, VA 20170
Habitat for Humanity — A special “Asia Tsunami Response Fund” has been established. To make a tax-deductible donation, go to: https://www.habitat.org/giving/donate.aspx?link=33.
Similarly, HeidelbergCement is supporting the rebuilding of the fishing village Batee, also in the province of Aceh, by contributing EUR270,000. Of the 6,000 residents of the village, more than 500 lost their lives in the fatal floods and 3,000 were left without homes. The local infrastructure was almost completely destroyed. HeidelbergCement wants the money to be used specifically to help rebuild houses, roads, schools, and hospitals. The company's subsidiary Indocement is coordinating the use of the funds.
