PLANT TOUR

On April 13, IEEE-IAS/PCA conference attendees will have the unique opportunity to tour the Phoenix Cement plant in Clarkdale, Ariz., which began production in 1959 to provide cement for the Glen Canyon Dam, which forms Lake Powell on the Arizona-Utah border. The plant is operated by Salt River Materials Group, a business enterprise of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.

A modernization of the operation was completed in 2003 and increased production capacity from 600,000 to 1.2 million tpy. Highlights of the new production line include a vertical roller mill for raw feed; vertical coal mill; indirect coal/coke firing system; a 5-stage ILC low-NOx preheater/precalciner; a 14.5-ft.-diameter tangential suspension kilin with friction drive; and a 3×4 crossbar clinker cooler. A separate project resulted in a total of 125,000 tons of clinker storage in two domes.

The modernization also included the installation of a vertical finish mill, the first of its kind to be used in the North American cement industry. A new laboratory and a central control room also incorporate the latest technology available. A new cement packer rated at 1,200 bags per hour and a 2,500-bags-per-hour palletizer are the most recent additions at the Phoenix Cement facility.
