Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico were 10.7 million mt in August 2003, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. This was a slight increase compared with shipments for August 2002. Cumulative shipments through August 2003 totaled 71.5 million mt, also a slight increase compared with those of the same period in 2002. Clinker production totaled 7.2 million mt in August 2003, a 3.8 percent decrease compared with 2002. Cumulative production through August 2003 was 53.7 million mt, a 1.4 percent decrease compared to the same 2002 period. Masonry cement shipments of 500,000 mt in August 2003 were 7.6 percent more than shipments in August 2002. Cumulative shipments through August 2003 were about 3.1 million mt, a 3.0 percent increase over 2002.
