PLANT TOUR — TXI'S ORO GRANDE OVERHAUL

The modernization of Texas Industries' (TXI's) Oro Grande, Calif., facility is complete and attendees of the 51st IEEE-IAS/PCA Cement Conference will be among the first to tour the new operation. Some highlights of the project include:

  • Limestone blending and storage using a Polysius Stacker and Reclaimer combination located inside a 367-ft-diam × 100-ft-tall aluminum dome containing 60,000 tons of limestone.
  • A Polysius ‘Polycom’ high-pressure grinding roll pair operating in a closed circuit with a high-efficiency separator.
  • A 5-stage DOPOL 90 two-string inline calciner tower with four gas analyzers for the tower and kiln gases, which along with dozens of other sensors in the process helps to ensure the plant operators have the necessary information for properly operating the kiln and preheater/precalciner tower.
  • A two-support, electromagnetic drive kiln using two 650-hp motors on the self-adjusting support rolls.
  • A 17-ft-diam × 247-ft-long kiln with a maximum rotation speed of 240 rotations/hour.
  • A Polysius, next-generation burner — the Polflam VN — with adjustable flame configuration and natural gas capabilities.
  • A Polysius ‘Polytrak’ cooler designed with nine clinker transport tracks and eight main under-compartment fans for cooling air.
  • An 300-ft-diam × 100-ft-tall aluminum clinker dome with five withdrawal points for blending, along with a special Aumund ‘mole’ that can reclaim the clinker that cannot fall into the withdrawal points.
  • A finish cement mill capable of grinding 200 tph of Type II/V cement and placing that cement into either the existing silos or a new 50,000-ton storage and loadout dome for the cement.
  • A central control room using the latest in process control, data collection, and display technologies.
