CalPortland announced that the company’s Rillito, Ariz., cement plant has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Energy Star certification for the eighth consecutive year.

Earning Energy Star certification highlights CalPortland’s status of operating within the highest level of performance of the top 25% of cement plants in the nation with regards to energy performance. The company has improved its energy performance by managing energy strategically across the entire organization and by making cost-effective improvements to its plant.

“Improving the energy efficiency of our nation’s industrial facilities is critical to protecting our environment,” said Jean Lupinacci, chief of the Energy Star Commercial & Industrial Branch. “From the plant floor to the board room, organizations are leading the way by making their facilities more efficient and earning EPA’s Energy Star certification.”

CalPortland is receiving this Energy Star certification in recognition for its commitment to high-level leadership in energy management throughout the company as well as demonstrating efficiency at the Rillito facility. Some of the key accomplishments for certification include:

  • Improved efficiency of the compressed air system.
  • Kiln baghouse fan efficiency improvements.
  • Engineering work on Tower Cyclone replacement.
  • Repair and Maintenance practices helping maintain kiln uptime and performance at a high level.
  • Quarry crushing and conveying equipment improvements.

CalPortland also received the EPA Energy Star Partner of the Year (POY) for Sustained Excellence award in 2019. The Glendora, Calif.-based company has received the award for 15 consecutive years, which is a feat that is unmatched by any other industrial company in the United States. It has established a corporate energy-efficiency culture and continues to lead the cement industry in environmental stewardship through investment in renewable energy, fuels and efficient industrial production technology.
