November Cement Shipments Drop 5.3 Percent

Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in November 2018 were 7.78 million metric tons (Mt), a decrease of 5.3 percent from shipments in November, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through November totaled about 91.5 Mt, an increase of 2.6 percent from those for the same period in 2017. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in November 2018 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois) received 41 percent of the November shipments.

Masonry cement shipments were 172,000 metric tons in November 2018, a decrease of 12.5 percent from those in November 2017. For the year through November, shipments totaled 2.26 Mt, essentially unchanged from the same period in 2017. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in November 2018 were Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Tennessee; these states received about 58 percent of the November shipments.

Clinker production totaled 6.4 Mt in November 2018, a decrease of 5.4 percent from the output (excluding Puerto Rico) in November 2017. For the year through November 2018, production was 70.4 Mt, essentially unchanged from the same period in 2017. The leading clinker-producing states in November 2018 were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama.
