Cement Shipments Spike in April

Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in April 2018 were about 8.2 million metric tons (Mt), 8.9 percent higher than shipments in April 2017, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through April totaled about 27.2 Mt, up by 2.6 percent from those for the same period in 2017. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in April 2018 were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Ohio), received about 44 percent of the April shipments.

Masonry cement shipments of about 209,000 metric tons (t) in April 2018 were 8.0 percent higher than those in April 2017. For the year through April, shipments totaled 753,000 t, 3.4 percent less than those for the same period in 2017. The leading masonry-cement-consuming states in April 2018 were Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia; these states received about 57 percent of the April shipments.

Clinker production totaled 6.4 Mt in April 2018, up by 5.0 percent from the output (excluding Puerto Rico) in April 2017. For the year through April 2018, production was 21.7 Mt, essentially unchanged from that of the same period in 2017. The leading clinker-producing states in April 2017 were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama.
