Cement Shipments Drop 2.3% in July

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in July 2021 were an estimated 9.6 million metric tons (Mt), a 2.3% decrease from shipments in July 2020, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through July totaled an estimated 60.0 Mt, a 3.9% increase from those for the same period in 2020. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in July 2021 were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Michigan; these states accounted for 39% of cement produced. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois) received 37% of July shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 202,000 metric tons in July 2021, a 10% decrease from those in July 2020. Shipments for the year through July totaled an estimated 1.4 Mt, essentially unchanged from those for the same period in 2020. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in July 2021 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina and California; these states received 55% of July shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.8 Mt in July 2021, a slight decrease from production in July 2020. Production for the year through July totaled an estimated 43.6 Mt, essentially unchanged from the same period in 2020. The leading clinker-producing states in July 2021 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama.
