Cement Shipments Down 3% in October

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in October 2020 were 9.8 million metric tons (Mt), a 3% decrease from shipments in October 2019, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry. Shipments for the year through October totaled 86.6 Mt, essentially unchanged from those for the same period in 2019. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in October 2020 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Michigan; these states accounted for 41% of cement produced. 

The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois) received 38% of October shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled 208,000 metric tons in October 2020, a 7% decrease from those in October 2019. Shipments for the year through October totaled 2.0 Mt, a 3% decrease from those for the same period in 2019. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in October 2020 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia; these states received 55% of October shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled 7.2 Mt in October 2020, a 5% decrease from production in October 2019. Production for the year through October totaled 64.8 Mt, a slight decrease from that for the same period in 2019. The leading clinker-producing states in October 2020 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama.
